We often receive letters from patients, telling us about their experiences at the practice. Here are some examples:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Michael,

I cannot even begin to thank you for all the work you have done in treating my teeth and restoring my mouth. I am now able to eat without the risk of choking. Not only have you given me back my confidence, but also you have given me back a lovely smile that I had forgotten I once had.

Over the years I had approached various dentists. However, on consultation, I really did not feel confident in their ability to deal with my problematic teeth. Consequently, time moved on and my dental problems deteriorated. Eventually my present dentist recommended you as the only person he felt could restore my mouth successfully.

As I walked into the sanctuary of your room and had an initial consultation with you, I knew immediately that I could put my trust in you, not to mention your wonderful team. Sure enough, as the weeks and months progressed with all the treatments, I just felt safe and secure knowing that everything would be dealt with in an efficient, professional and caring manner.

Larryl is an excellent hygienist and always made the sessions more pleasurable with her jolly personality and sense of humour. Andrea is the finest technician and 'artist'. Anja and Nataliya, whose friendliness and comfort made all the surgery and treatments so bearable. Dr Yusof Omar, the anaesthetist, always spot on in his sedation - wonderful! Also Lorraine at the beginning and Sam towards the end of my treatment were so lovely to deal with.

I truly appreciate how hard you have worked with the monumental undertaking of my restoration work. Nothing but perfection was good enough. I am not saying this lightly. Twenty months of treatment with many lengthy surgical procedures. Always a personal phone call afterwards to make sure I was OK and thank God I always was. What is so wonderful is the maintenance, as I know that you will be taking care of my teeth in the future.

Words are inadequate to express how grateful I am. It was a privilege to be under your professional care all these months and to have such a successful outcome. Thank you once again.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Michael,

I hope you are keeping well.  I can hardly believe how quickly time has passed since my final appointment, which marked the successful completion of my treatment.

It had been my intention to write to you immediately, to thank you for your truly excellent work which has changed my life for the better, in a way I can barely find the words to express.  In fact, I have begun several letters to you.  Each time abandoning them, because I find it so difficult to express my feelings on paper, without also making a comparison with the wonderful treatment I received at your practice, compared to that experienced elsewhere.  I should add, at no time in the past, did I opt for the cheap option.

My worst experience was when I joined a practice in the most salubrious part of London, where I was under the impression that I was going to have my implant operation performed by a specialist who lectures on implant surgery at a major London teaching hospital.  I chose him because I thought I would be in safe hands.  During the implant operation to place six implants, he accidentally cut the underneath of my tongue requiring four stitches, accidentally crushed the nerve in my lower jaw leaving me with permanent discomfort, and placed five out of the six implants so badly that five months later, they were removed by a maxillo facial surgeon who stated: “there was no way they could ever possibly have osseointegrated.”

Upon completion of two years of extensive surgery in your care, you will recall I was overjoyed with the final results.  Your immense skill in achieving what I, and my husband consider perfection, has left me overwhelmed with relief and gratitude.

From the very beginning of my treatment with you, right through to its completion some two years later, I was amazed by your expertise, patient and quiet determination to achieve exactly what you knew I was hoping for.

You planned every step of the way meticulously.  Nothing was overlooked.  There were no risky shortcuts.  At all times, the atmosphere in your surgery was calm and relaxed and your team competent and caring.

Many surgical procedures were necessary to bring me to where I am today.  I recall your very kind anaesthetist checking my blood pressure immediately prior to sedation and commenting that my blood pressure had not risen even slightly.  I replied that I felt totally confident in the knowledge that I was in safe hands.

Whether you were performing an operation requiring a general anaesthetic, i.e., when bone was harvested from my hip and grafted onto my upper jaw, or carrying out a sinus lift, or replacing titanium implants, I always recovered quickly, with the absolute minimum of swelling or discomfort.  This is in stark contrast to the surgery carried out elsewhere, when I frequently emerged looking as though I had been in a boxing ring and the surgery was often a failure.

Whatever you did surgically Michael, it was always successful.

All implant surgery is expensive.  It is even more costly when it goes wrong!  In my experience, some surgeons have tried to cut corners, either by not taking a scan when it is appropriate to do so, by allowing insufficient time to plan the patients’ treatment and trying to keep the duration of the appointments to an absolute minimum.

It is not difficult to understand why you succeed so magnificently where many others fail.  Apart from the fact that you are a Specialist in dental surgery, you leave nothing to chance.  Your standards in every respect are exemplary and you allocate a tremendous amount of time to ‘behind the scenes’ planning, often with your superb technician.  You also spend a great deal of time with each individual patient, checking and re-checking.  You employ an excellent team, all of whom are highly trained.  Having an in-house technician who is equally dedicated to achieving the best possible results, is also a tremendous advantage.  You spend more time with your patients, than any dental surgeon I have ever encountered.

Whilst my extensive treatment did cost a lot of money, it has to be put into perspective.  Prior to finding you, I spent eight years going from pillar to post, trying to find a dental surgeon capable of doing the job properly.  All the treatment was expensive, most of it was a failure!

In my opinion, and the opinion of other of your patients to whom I have spoken, the overall service you provide is worth every penny.

I remain eternally thankful for your expertise and dedication.  As I said at the beginning of this letter, you have improved the quality of my life beyond measure.

Thank you Michael.

With very best wishes.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Michael,

It is now a few months since you completed the full mouth restoration on my teeth.

Although I have been somewhat tardy in writing to express my thanks, and acknowledge the success of the techniques and treatment that you eventually decided to adopt, the benefit the time has made clear how successful the treatment has been in adding to the quality of my life.

You will recall that when I originally approached you some years ago you were hesitant that there was any effective method of treating my problems, and dealing with the complicated bite issues, short of full crowning of all the teeth. Although I was disappointed at the time, what convinced me that I was in the right hands was your reasoned reluctance to offer me any of the compromises that I wished to adopt, on the basis that you wanted only a solution that would be enduring and not require yet further treatment.

I particularly wanted to thank you for taking the trouble, on one of your visits to the USA, to investigate newer techniques that might benefit me and for writing to me unprompted to explain that, with the benefit of these techniques, there was in fact a solution available to me that met your high standards for treatment whilst also avoiding the massive invasion, as I saw it, of full mouth crowning.

I cannot pretend that the full treatment of veneers did not seem invasive as the time, and indeed there were occasions when I resented the long periods of coping with temporary veneers, etc., but I was increasingly reassured that, after many of years of being let down by practitioners on whom I placed too much reliance, I was finally in the hands of a group of professionals who could be relied upon to do their best and get me to a high quality outcome.

If I may say so, the group that you have assembled comes across as a strong and very high quality operation. Apart from the administrative skills and pleasant and helpful personality of Lorraine and your other assistants, you do of course have in Andrea a technician of the highest order (an "artist" as you correctly described him to me at the outset), and I would be unsurprised if there was none better around for this kind of work.

I also could not forget the enormously reassuring hand of Dr Omar whose sedation services initially left me apprehensive but eventually became yet another reassuring aspect of the ongoing treatment, couple of course with his unswerving diligence throughout.

I now have a new mouth, a new outlook on day to day life and a much healthier biting action, all in the context of a mouth that looks entirely natural and not the product of a desire for a Hollywood façade. I am immensely grateful to you and your team for this.

Finally, I am comforted that at the end of the day I decided to accept treatment with your surgery in London rather than go abroad, as I know that if any problems arise, I should be able readily to access the highest quality service required. Inevitably, as I think you anticipated, there have been some minor "teething" problems (if you will pardon the awful pun) and I am grateful to you for helping to sort these out with the same efficiency that you brought to the major restoration work.

Regards.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Michael

It is now just over a year since you completed my extensive implant and bridge work, i.e.. removal of all of my remaining natural teeth, the placing of implants in both upper and lower jaws and the construction and fitting of complete upper and lower bridges. Having now had the time to forget almost entirely the physical and psychological stresses of the various surgical procedures and the interim use of temporary dentures that were entailed in my treatment programme (which it would be wrong of me to understate) and also to fully adjust to my new "teeth", I felt that I should write to let you know what a positive difference your work has made to my life.

I am sure that, like myself, many of your patients come to you with prejudices and fears born out of past experiences of thuggish dental work and/or years of oral pain. I was not always able to mask my fears (more often than not manifested as anger) before reaching the surgery door, but if there were times when you or members of your team regretted taking on a patient apparently from hell (as there surely must have been) none of you ever let it show!

I cannot thank you, and all of your team, enough for not just aspiring to but achieving the most exacting professional standards throughout my treatment. I would not suggest to anyone that extensive implant and bridge work is an entirely painless process. That said. I would emphasise that thanks to both yourself and Dr. Omar, physical pain and discomfort. which I had expected to be substantial, in fact were kept to an absolute minimum throughout. I, and all of the friends and family members who collected me after my various surgical procedures, were enormously impressed by the high degree of post-surgical monitoring and care that both yourself and Dr. Omar provide. Further, whilst I personally found some aspects of my treatment programme distressing, appropriate psychological and moral support were provided throughout, especially from Dr. Omar, who always managed to calm my fears and make me feel safe, but also from the whole of the rest of the team. Although he is not so often on public view, I should also mention Andrea who, no doubt ably assisted by Ashley, is little short of an artist. His joy and pride in his work are both obvious and infectious!

As you predicted at the outset, a year on I am able to bite into and chew a whole range of foods that I had not been able to eat comfortably for many years before my treatment, such as uncut apples and crusty bread, and I now find that I simply am no longer aware that my new "teeth" are not in fact my own. Just as significantly, I have stoppedhiding my mouth behind a hand to mask my teeth before smiling or laughing and have regained my natural smile and laugh.  My family and friends all have commented on how much more relaxed I now am and, having always thought myself to be a confident person, I can scarcely believe the degrees of enhanced self confidence and pleasure that I have derived from something so apparently insignificant as not having to hesitate before smiling or laughing! Moreover, I now am astonished at the degree of dental pain that I must have put up with for most of my adult life to date - the debilitating, and often dehumanising effects of this dental pain have only become apparent to me since it has ceased to be a more or less constant feature of my life.

Even a year ago, I would have recommended you without hesitation to anyone needing restorative or surgical dental treatment, whether extensive or minor. Now, I am so genuinely delighted with the longer term outcomes of my treatment programme, which have far exceeded my own expectations (although not yours), that I find it difficult to think of adequate words of endorsement for yourexcellent work- I hope that a simple but heartfelt "thank you" to you and all of your team for so significantly improving the quality of my life will suffice!

Kind regards,

To: Dr Michael Wise et al.

The fear of the treatment that was necessary to virtually rebuild my upper jaw was brought about by the failure and dreadful pain of prior experiences that I had received from earlier "highly recommended" dentists.

I listened to others who were pleased with treatments they had received from their various dental practitioners. I was impressed and a little envious, at the results, but could not bring myself to the point of having "another go". That is, until the "Dental Grapevine" shot themselves in the foot.

Over and over again, as I consulted dentist after dentist I would hear in their ramblings that they had either attended lectures, or were much cheaper than a Dr Michael Wise and could give me the same treatment at half the price. The whispered name kept cropping up. I just had to find him. The terrible fear was still there but the treatment was becoming essential.

Finally I arrived at his pristine, super hygienic rooms in Wimpole Street. He is younger than I imagined but is direct in attitude and runs a very tight ship. Dr Michael Wise heads up a team of the kindest and thoroughly professional men and women I have come across in my lifetime. They are all amazing at what they do, so expertly and yet, with such humility that they appear to have been born doing what they do. From the amazing anaesthetist Dr Omar, a true gentleman, to Andreas the world's best dental architect whose face mirrors the genuine pleasure he derives from making a beautiful smile for his client. Best of all is watching Michael stand back to equally admire his work and see the pleasure he has worked so hard to achieve. Perfection is not good enough for Michael Wise it has to be better than perfection. He knows it and I'm aware he knows it.

I couldn't have dreamed of a better experience. The lovely hygienist, the reception staff, the dental assistants are of a class unexpected in England today.

True I have had to hock my socks for this experience. But I have solid proof that perfection exists. I compare it only to what I expect of myself in whatever I set out to do. It is inbuilt into the entire Michael Wise ethic.

I am truly humbled by all that goes on in the sanctuary of Wimpole Street.

Sincere regards.

PS. This may or may not be important to you all, but I needed to say it.

PPS. This is only the rough draft but I wouldn't have sent if I had to print it out properly …..
